Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The centre’s educational profile focuses on postgraduate medical specialty training needs defined within curricula and broader multiprofessional workforce development needs identified within practice.
Simulation-based activities are designed and delivered within the specialised simulation centre environment, or through planned ‘in situ’ exercises that take place within different clinical settings according to local service requirements. These activities can support competency attainment in technical and procedural skills, and usually include a strong focus on development of associated ‘non-technical’ skills such as clinical leadership and teamwork, situational awareness and decision-making, and effective communication skills for different circumstances. Particular emphasis is paid to how these skills and behaviours can be transferred into practice to support improvements in individual or team performance.
An emerging role for the centre relates to the rapid growth of digital learning technologies that offer immersive experiences such as virtual, augmented or mixed reality technologies. The centre is currently seeking to play a leading role in how these technologies are adopted and evaluated in educational or clinical practice, which will need to form an important component of a digital learning strategy at NUH.
Alongside this educational portfolio, TSCSC is a national leader in the application of human factors (systems science) in healthcare, which is provided by in-house specialists and supported by excellent relationships with an active network of national and international academic and safety critical industry experts. This work is increasingly being aligned with human factors input to prioritised workstreams within NUH.
The Director will be responsible for the strategic management and development of TSCSC including budget oversight. They will have responsibility for ensuring that annual planning objectives are developed, in line with NUH’s strategic planning programme.
The Director is responsible for the strategic development of the Centre including the use of simulation and immersive learning technologies to support education and training programmes, multiprofessional team training and leadership programmes, and the integration of Human Factors (systems science) to benefit quality and safety of care and staff wellbeing workstreams.
The postholder will represent the Centre at key meetings within the trust, regionally and nationally, raising the profile of the centre and developing strategic partnerships and contributing to communities of practice.
The postholder will provide clinical leadership and support for implementing and evaluating new and existing programmes of teaching including the opportunity to lead and teach on specific programmes.
