Job Title: Phlebotomist

Start Date: 10 July 2023 (fixed term 18 months from start date)

Hours of work: 8.00am - 1.30pm, Monday to Friday - 27.5 per week

Salary: £15,079 - £15,802 per annum

Responsible to: Practice Manager (Administratively) and Nurse Partner (Clinically)

Location: Ladywell Medical Centre (East), 26 Featherhall Avenue, Edinburgh, EH12 7UN and

Ladywell Medical Centre (West), 10 Ladywell Road, Edinburgh, EH12 7TB

Closing date is 17 May and interviews will be held in week commencing 22 May.

Job Purpose: To work collaboratively within the General Practice Treatment Room Nursing Team and as part of a wider multidisciplinary team to collect blood samples, as requested, covering patients of both Ladywell Medical Centre West and Ladywell Medical Centre East, by venepuncture and Coaguchek machine ensuring patient and personal safety through adherence to practice protocols, policies and procedures and relevant health and safety legislation.

Effectively communicating with more vulnerable groups of patients, in particular those with severe ill health, mental illness, sensory impairments and/or behavioural issues.

Key Result Areas of the Post

  • To collect blood samples as requested by medical staff and nursing staff from adult patients by venepuncture or coaguchek machine to enable appropriate tests to be carried out.
  • To ensure all protocols for handling, labelling and documenting the collection of specimens are adhered to.
  • To ensure delivery of specimens to appropriate base for timed uplift.
  • To record patient encounters accurately and timely on practice computer system.
  • To inform appropriate medical/nursing staff if specimen is not obtained or if there are any other concerns relating to the patient.
  • To apply infection control measures within the practice according to local and national guidelines ensuring phlebotomy equipment is kept in a clean and safe manner.
  • To follow procedures for reporting incidents involving patients or staff, with particular reference to needlestick injury.
  • Liaise with the Nursing Team Administrator to ensure correct levels and items of stock are ordered.
  • Work collaboratively within the team to ensure all emergency equipment is up to date and maintained.
  • To communicate effectively with other team members and the wider nursing team and practice staff.
  • To ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and practice policies and procedures at all times.

  • Demonstrate evidence of appropriate continuing professional development activity to maintain up to date knowledge and ongoing competence in all aspects of the role
  • Demonstrate evidence of ability to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of their own clinical practice
  • Demonstrate evidence of working autonomously and as part of a team
  • Previous experience of working in a General Practice setting is desirable but not essential as training will be provided
  • Possessing general computer literacy in a Windows environment is essential

Communications and Working Relationships

  • The postholder will report to the Practice Manager to discuss requests for personal annual leave or TOIL thus ensuring cover of the post
  • The postholder will communicate face to face with all team members on a daily basis, utilise telephone and e:mail as a means of internal and external communication and regularly take part in team meetings to ensure updated knowledge of systems and procedures is gained and/or shared
  • The postholder will provide input into the training of attached Undergraduate Medical Students
  • Liaise with external parties such as Pharmacies, Care Homes, Hospitals where relevant
  • Liaise with families and carers where relevant

Assignment and Review of Work

  • Work is generated by the medical and nursing staff in the practice.
  • It is the responsibility of the Practice Manager to allocate additional duties as required
  • The post holder will use his/her discretion to anticipate or resolve problems independently throughout the course of his/her duty. Any complex problems or complaints, in relation to staff or patients, which cannot be resolved should be reported to the Practice Manager
  • A formal appraisal takes place annually with the Nurse Partner where the work of the postholder is evaluated and action points identified, as necessary, for further training and/or development
  • The post holder is responsible for his/her own continual professional development and performance and upkeep of own personal development plan by identifying any gaps in skills and knowledge at annual appraisal
  • A willingness to undertake relevant training/courses in order to close the skills and knowledge gap

Health, safety and security

  • Use the personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
  • Identify the risks involved in work activities and undertake them in a way that manages the risks
  • Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each clinical room so

that they are clean, safe and free from hazards, reporting any potential risks identified

  • Know the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as

appropriate

  • Be aware of statutory child health procedures and statutory local guidance and referral criteria
  • Know the health and safety policies and procedures within the workplace
  • Be able to identify the risks to health of microbiological and chemical hazards within the working

environment according to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health

  • Attend to blood and body fluid spillages within each Practice
  • Ensure commitment to the protection of both physical assets and confidential information complying with data protection legislation and the Access to Health Records Act (1990)
  • Ensure all activities are properly authorised and processed, checking entries on the pc are inputted correctly
