Your new role


We have a fantastic opportunity for an Assistant Geo-Environmental Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Scotland on a 12-month fixed term contract. We have design hubs in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Motherwell, Perth, and Aberdeen together with additional office space in Dumfries, Ayr, Dundee, Nairn and Huntly.

Our Amey Consulting Scotland Team are involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and associated infrastructure projects across Scotland with cumulative values in excess of £1bn.

Amey manages both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, with the Southwest being awarded in 2020 and the Northeast in 2022. These are 8-year contracts, extendable up to 12 years. In addition to these long-term contracts, we also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges and transportation and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and established contractors across the country.

These long-term contracts provide excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional design staff at all stages of their careers to be involved in some of the most exciting and challenging engineering projects associated with Scotland’s arterial road network.

As an Assistant Geo-Environmental Engineer, you will play an important part in assisting in the delivery of commissions undertaken across Amey Consulting’s Highways and Rail accounts and ensure compliance with all relevant technical standards and delivery of all the specified project outcomes on time and to the quality required.


The standard hours of work are


40 hours per week.

You will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the Senior and/or Principal Engineer and other team members by contributing under limited supervision to the production of technically sound engineering solutions
  • Project Managing small to medium sized schemes under supervision of Senior/Principal Engineer
  • Checking of output undertaken by Graduate and Assistant grade Engineers relevant to experience
  • Provision of mentoring to at least one Graduate or Assistant Engineer
  • Assisting in the planning and execution of geo-environmental desk studies, ground investigations and remedial works
  • Assisting with project planning, programming, cost control and administration
  • Undertaking surveys and site supervision duties
  • Carrying out inspection work, feasibility studies, report preparation, cost estimating
  • Analysis of geo-environmental data and the preparation of interpretative and design reports or sections thereof
  • Contribute to outline and detailed geo-environmental designs
  • Provide technically sound deliverables for technical geo-environmental commissions working under supervision

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in Geology or Engineering Geology or equivalent in, environmental. earth science or chemistry disciplines (with strong Geo-Environmental technical ability and experience)
  • Computer literate and conversant with MS Office suite and modelling software such as Surfer
  • Familiar with BIM document management systems such as ProjectWise
  • Knowledge of geo-environmental risk assessment modelling techniques and software
  • A proven ability to work within a team environment with a dedicated approach to meet project deadlines
  • Good communication skills with the ability to communicate with clients and stakeholders
