The Book Operations team supports the international Commercial teams, by monitoring, supporting and testing the systems used to supply our clients with data.

Job Purpose

As a Classifier you will be part of the Classification team within Book Operations. The Classification team is responsible for adding subject classifications to all bibliographic records in an accurate and timely manner, consistent with agreed service level commitments made to publishers and other data suppliers. You will provide advice, support and assistance to customers, publishers and general enquirers and advise other departments within the company on classification issues. You will contribute as required to special classification projects.

Role Responsibilities

This role requires the successful individual to show competence across a range of skills and tasks, which will encompass the following:

  • To add subject classifications to all bibliographic records in an accurate, consistent and timely manner, using the agreed schemes (primarily Dewey Decimal and Thema) and procedures and according to agreed service level commitments made to publishers and other data suppliers.

  • To develop and maintain effective working relationships with other teams and departments within the company whose work is affected by classification issues.

  • To provide specialist knowledge and contribute as required to special classification projects such as the provision of mappings between subject schemes.

  • To provide advice, support and assistance to customers, publishers and general enquirers both in writing and via the telephone on classification matters

  • To advise other departments within the company (e.g. Nielsen BookScan) on classification issues.

  • Along with other team members check the quality of classification data on a regular basis.

  • To keep abreast of changes to existing classification schemes within the industry.

Requirements:

Essential:

  • Qualification in Library and Information Studies (or equivalent).

  • Expert proficiency in Dewey Decimal Classification scheme.

  • Solid understanding of subject classification schemes in general.

  • Highly proficient PC skills.

  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal.

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.

Preferred:

  • Expert proficiency in other classification schemes used in Nielsen BookData Products (Thema and BIC).

  • In-depth understanding of the publishing industry and book trade.

  • You may be asked to undertake additional duties to those above, either on a temporary or permanent basis, which the Company reasonably believes you can carry out or for which you will be trained.

  • May require reasonable travel to clients and other Nielsen offices.
