What does the team do?

Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems is a cutting edge team of engineers, product managers and project managers who develop Ocado’s proprietary called the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP). The 'Bot' is the poster child for OSP and the backbone product for this team.

Our team has a hands-on approach to discovery, building everything in house and with the freedom to innovate. You’ll be in a dynamic environment, being able to work close to the Bot and the testing equipment, interacting with different teams and disciplines, developing software in multiple languages and analysing data and performance aiming for continuous improvement of the Bot and its systems.


What would I be doing?

The role of the Senior Software Engineer is to design and develop control algorithms and testing routines for the motive components of the bot, as well as performing analysis to characterise the system behaviour, using data driven approaches for performance evaluation and control design.

You will be involved in

  • Designing and developing embedded software for our bot controllers
  • Performing data analysis for the development and optimisation of systems behaviour
  • Prototyping software for discovery, analysis and implementation of motive solutions
  • Creating tests to validate accuracy and conformity of code
  • Review and maintain code written by others
  • Investigating issues as reported by grid operations and other engineering teams
  • Analysing and optimising hardware behaviour and performance
  • Collaborating closely with cross functional engineering teams


What we are looking for

Essential

  • C / C++ - strong in at least 1 of these
  • Ability to debug complex issues to successful resolution
  • Proven track record for delivery of embedded or control software
  • Experience in developing unit tests and working with testing frameworks
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary environment and ability to bridge the gap between software and other disciplines

Desirable

  • Java and SQL experience
  • Statistics / data analytics
  • Knowledge of or interest in learning data Frameworks (e.g. BigQuery, Google Cloud Platform)
  • Basic understanding of electronics & electronic systems (actuators, sensors, etc)
  • Some experience with version control (Git) and CI/CD pipelines

  • A relevant qualification in mechatronics, robotics, computer science
  • A good understanding of Electronics
  • Actuators and sensors
  • Experience with control solutions for mobile robots
  • Experience with working with Big Data and data analytics tools
